OPPORTUNITIES
Desired Future South Dakota should continue to have ample water supply protected for future generations.
The desired future for water rights and water supply in South Dakota will depend significantly on the actions of local communities, businesses, and other stakeholders. Each community should integrate plans for residential growth, economic development opportunities, the growth and needs of school districts, as well as future zoning and land use. Through collaboration, communities and stakeholders can promote conservation, share resources, and plan for the future to achieve the greatest impact. These plans are essential for identifying both current and future water needs. Allocating vital resources to future studies is critical for understanding aquifer dynamics, better managing allocations, exploring recharge opportunities, and ensuring source water protection. Developing water reuse guidelines and opportunities can help reduce the strain on fresh water sources. Did You Know? Central Ohio is leading in industrial water reuse with a master planning process that includes setting regulatory requirements, expanding recycled water planning, and evaluating alternative water supplies for industry. The plan also focuses on reserving potable water for residential users, identifying regulatory pathways, and considering the feasibility and costs of using sewer mining and treatment plant effluent.
