SCOPE The information within this section includes drinking water treatment, distribution, and storage. Once the quantity of water is available through a water right, it is treated for the proper use, stored as necessary, and transmitted or distributed to the end users. Water is a vital resource for economic growth. Without water that is treated for its intended use, and an adequate supply that can be stored, those who plan for growth opportunities are forced to look elsewhere for a location that meets their needs. Recommendations are intended to provide education, safety, quality, and sufficient water supply for these growth opportunities. In 1974, Congress passed the Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA), to protect public health. The act regulates the nation’s public drinking water supply and its sources. The SDWA has authorized the United States Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA) to set national health-based standards for drinking water to protect against both naturally occurring and man-made contaminants that may be found in drinking water. The State of South Dakota began primary enforcement of the SDWA in 1983. The South Dakota Drinking Water Program, part of DANR, develops and enforces the South Dakota drinking water regulations that apply to public water systems.
