02 Statewide Economic Development Infrastructure Plan

CASE STUDY

Training and Continuing Education Programs There is a nationwide need for water and wastewater operators. With impending retirements and a lack of visibility of the industry, recruitment and retention is challenging. Several states have recognized this issue and proposed creative solutions. Promoting meaningful careers in the water industry, supported by initial training and essential continuing education, is vital for developing a strong workforce. Two successful programs exemplify this approach. Bismarck State College, North Dakota’s Polytechnic Institution, offers a water and wastewater technology certificate designed for entry-level employment in water and wastewater treatment facilities. Students participate in online training followed by a brief internship or hands-on lab, providing them with the field competencies needed for the industry. The Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) Water Environmental Technology Program provides extensive training for water and wastewater management. It equips students with the skills needed to begin or advance their careers in the water industry, including operating and maintaining equipment, calculating chemical dosages, adjusting chemicals and pH levels, taking test samples, and evaluating results. Additionally, the program features an onsite wastewater training center designed to address various wastewater system operation needs.
