02 Statewide Economic Development Infrastructure Plan

CROSS-INFRASTRUCTURE POSSIBILITIES

ENERGY Utilize electric providers as partners in development. As water is made available for growth and development, electric power will be needed as well. As improvements are made to expand water supply and drinking water, coordination will be needed with electric partners to open new opportunities across the State. Similar efforts can be made to cooperate with natural gas providers, such as ethanol plants, when feasible. Power is vital for pumps that are used to transmit water. Pumps that transmit large amounts of water or across long distances require more power. As South Dakota looks to add large water transmission lines, or grow distribution networks, a partnership with local and regional power suppliers will be crucial. There are plenty of opportunities to strategically plan for increased water and power demands together to benefit communities across the State.

WATER REUSE Develop State guidelines to encourage use of non-traditional water sources and reuse, thereby increasing the availability of drinking water.

BROADBAND Water treatment plants and water distribution systems are vital to everyday life. These systems often have automatic controls and remote monitoring systems for smooth operation. The networks and systems that allow for these operations should be secure from cyber threats.
