02 Statewide Economic Development Infrastructure Plan

EXISTING CONDITIONS

DATA In the South Dakota Department of Agriculture and Natural Resources document, The 2024 South Dakota Integrated Report for Surface Water Quality Assessment. 2024 Impaired Status Report , 21.9% of assessed stream miles met all water quality standards for the designated beneficial use, and 20% of assessed lakes met the same standard. The most common impairments preventing streams and rivers from meeting the beneficial use standards were the levels of total suspended solids (TSS) and E. coli . TSS contamination primarily originates from non-point sources and is a significant factor in nonsupport for fish and aquatic life. E. coli contamination, often from livestock and wildlife, is a primary factor in nonsupport for recreational uses. In lakes, the primary causes of nonsupport are mercury in fish tissue and excess nutrients.
