02 Statewide Economic Development Infrastructure Plan

SCOPE Providers are actively working to provide broadband throughout South Dakota utilizing federal and state grants to bridge the digital divide under the title of South Dakota's Quest for Enhanced Broadband Connectivity.

South Dakota seeks to connect communities, empower businesses, and bridge the digital divide. The importance of reliable high-speed internet is crucial in today's interconnected world, and South Dakota has recognized the need to enhance its broadband infrastructure. The State's leaders, in collaboration with various stakeholders, are embarking on ambitious initiatives aimed at expanding access to broadband services, fostering economic growth, and empowering its citizens through enhanced digital connectivity. South Dakota has faced unique challenges in providing adequate broadband access to its residents. Its rural nature and low population density have made it economically challenging for internet service providers to extend their networks to all corners of the State. Consequently, many rural areas have been left underserved or completely devoid of reliable high-speed internet, impeding educational opportunities, healthcare access, and economic development. Recognizing the digital divide's detrimental impact on South Dakota's progress, the State government, alongside federal agencies and private sector partners, has made significant strides in addressing this issue. Robust broadband deployment programs and funding initiatives are in motion to expand coverage, increase network capacity, and enhance the overall quality of internet service across the State.

In collaboration with internet service providers, South Dakota is actively investing in infrastructure projects, deploying fiber-optic cables, and leveraging cutting-edge technologies to reach underserved areas. By expanding the broadband footprint, the State aims to empower its citizens by ensuring they have access to essential online services, educational resources, telehealth facilities, and business opportunities that have become increasingly reliant on digital connectivity. The benefits of improved broadband connectivity in South Dakota are far‑reaching. It will enable students to access online educational resources and participate in remote learning, regardless of their geographical location. It will allow healthcare providers to extend telemedicine services to remote areas, connecting patients with specialized care and reducing barriers to medical assistance. Moreover, enhanced broadband access will create new avenues for businesses to thrive, attracting investment, boosting local economies, and creating job opportunities. South Dakota's commitment to narrowing the digital divide is fueled by a vision of a future where all its residents, regardless of their location, can harness the opportunities offered by the digital age. By fostering collaboration among stakeholders, investing in infrastructure, and embracing innovative solutions, the State is poised to transform itself into a model for broadband expansion, setting an example for other regions facing similar challenges.
