02 Statewide Economic Development Infrastructure Plan

CHALLENGES

Capacity, Constraints, and Impacting Factors Infrastructure Building and maintaining the necessary physical infrastructure for broadband deployment can be a significant challenge. Laying down fiber-optic cables or setting up wireless towers requires substantial investments and coordination with local governments, agencies, and property owners. Cost Broadband deployment can be expensive, especially in rural or remote areas where the population density is low. The return on investment may not be immediate, making it less attractive for private companies to invest in these areas. Spectrum Allocation For wireless broadband technologies, access to appropriate frequency spectrums is crucial. Spectrum scarcity or inefficient allocation can limit the capacity and performance of wireless broadband networks. Digital Divide The digital divide refers to the disparity in internet access between different regions and socioeconomic groups. Deploying broadband in underserved or marginalized areas is challenging due to the lack of infrastructure and financial resources.

Interference + Congestion In densely populated urban areas, interference and network congestion can degrade broadband performance. Managing and optimizing network resources to provide consistent and reliable service can be difficult. Technical Limitations Certain geographical features like mountains, forests, or bodies of water can impede broadband signals, making it challenging to provide coverage in some areas. Public Resistance In some cases, local communities may oppose the installation of broadband infrastructure due to concerns about health, aesthetics, or property values. Skill + Training Deploying and maintaining broadband infrastructure requires skilled technicians and engineers. The availability of qualified personnel can be a constraint in some regions. Connectivity to the Internet Backbone In some areas, the lack of connectivity to major internet backbones can limit the overall capacity and speed of broadband services.

Efforts are continually being made to overcome these constraints through public-private partnerships, government initiatives, technological advancements, and policy changes. Addressing these challenges requires collaboration between stakeholders from the public and private sectors to ensure widespread and equitable access to broadband services.
