02 Statewide Economic Development Infrastructure Plan

OPPORTUNITIES

South Dakota has many advantages and opportunities when looking forward to the future of natural gas and energy supply within the State. Renewable natural gas (RNG) production represents a significant opportunity for South Dakota. There are currently several operational facilities in South Dakota and construction underway for additional facilities representing nearly a billion cubic feet of additional RNG annual production. Source: Seneca Bioenergy . South Dakota has the potential to produce over 14 billion cubic feet of RNG annually, primarily from livestock operations Source: American Biogas Council. This would offset a significant portion of natural gas usage in the state and reduce dependency on out-of-state resources and intrastate transmission pipelines. South Dakota has a major natural gas pipeline running through the state. Currently, South Dakota only taps into a small percentage of the Northern Border pipeline, while the rest continues south to other states. Although expansion from any pipeline can be a long costly process, Northern Border may present less hurdles as a significant source already going through the state. South Dakota produces a large percentage of its electricity from renewable sources that do not rely on resources being imported into the State.

Did You Know? RNG is a high-quality gas that is interchangeable with traditional natural gas. RNG is essentially derived from biogas, which is produced through the decomposition of organic matter. RNG undergoes purification processes to meet purity standards. Sources of Biogas » Landfills » Livestock Operations » Organic Waste » Wastewater Treatment
