Desired Future Natural gas is one of many energy supply networks that exist within South Dakota. In addition to natural gas, energy moves around the State via electricity, propane, gasoline, biofuels, and other sources in separate systems. Modern technology has made the energy sources interchangeable for most uses. In planning for the future, a more comprehensive approach than viewing utilities as separate networks is needed. Multiple utilities need to come together as one large energy supply network that extends beyond the state's borders. This will allow the State to lead when it comes to energy expansion and promote competitive growth, without reliance on a single form of energy. As South Dakota grows forward, a statewide direction is needed to ensure the development of a safe, reliable, and resilient energy supply network that promotes economic growth and energy independence.
This could be in the form of: » State and regional leadership to develop regionalized energy network solutions built thoughtfully, intentionally, and in alignment with available resources, coordinated to efficiently serve larger groups. This could take the form of public-owned utility corridors. » Creating programs and allocating of resources that create an energy supply network that puts South Dakota at the center. One that taps into the people and resources of the State, creates energy independence, and drives economic growth at all levels. Energy that is truly made in South Dakota. » Embracing innovation and ideas to remove barriers to growth. State-level expertise and resources in critical topics that can apply flexible and innovated solutions where traditional approaches stall.
