EXISTING PLANS SDDOT has many statewide plans and initiatives relating to transportation and economic development. Some relevant plans include: » 2045 Long Range Transportation Plan » 2025–2028 Statewide Transportation Improvement Program (STIP) » Asset Management Plans EV Infrastructure Deployment Plan » Freight Plan » Strategic Highway Safety Plan » Transportation Asset Management Plan SDDOT Projects and Plans dot.sd.gov/projects-studies/planning Metropolitan Planning Organizations play a significant role in coordinating SDDOT policies and projects with federally recognized urban areas. In South Dakota, three MPOs exist to create several federally mandated plans: » Rapid City Metropolitan Planning Organization » Siouxland Interstate Metropolitan Planning Council (SIMPCO) » Sioux Falls Metropolitan Planning Organization Their Transportation Improvement Programs (TIP) are heavily coordinated with, and are included in, the Statewide Transportation Improvement Program (STIP). South Dakota Planning Districts are associations of local governments and Tribal Nations that work to enhance economies within their districts. They develop work plans, Comprehensive Economic Development Strategies (CEDS), and other documents. They are often the conduit between their members and funding, educational, and communication resources. The Annual South Dakota Tribal Transportation Safety Summit is an opportunity for tribes, the State, and other local and federal partners to jointly address transportation safety on and around Tribal lands. Local units of government address transportation through comprehensive plans and CIPs. Comprehensive plans are typically high level and policy driven. Policies are enacted and implemented through planning, design, and construction projects. Special plans can be created for specific highway corridors or county-wide highway systems and other parts of the transportation system that need more detailed study.
