EXISTING CONDITIONS
The railroad system in South Dakota, once totaling 4,420‑route‑miles, decreased to a 1,935-mile system as of 2021. A majority of the rail miles in South Dakota are under private ownership. There are eight distinct railroads, including two large national (Class I) railroads, one regional (Class II) railroad, and five short line (Class III) railroads. The State possesses the rest of the active rail miles, which are operated by Class II and Class III railroads.
