CROSS-INFRASTRUCTURE POSSIBILITIES
ROADS Investment in some rail improvement projects, especially rail-served industrial sites, can shift freight hauling from trucks to rail, reducing impacts to highways. Heavy trucks deteriorate the structural integrity of highways significantly faster than lighter vehicles. In some situations, rail funding can be partially or fully offset by the reduced need for highway maintenance and replacement.
WATER Efficiency gained through smart rail investments can reduce the carbon output and other environmental impacts of the transportation sector. Much of this efficiency can be gained with minimal additional infrastructure.
ELECTRIC More efficient transportation of goods can reduce future energy demand, including on electricity, as the transportation sector continues it's transition to greater electrification. Advancements are being made in the electrification of freight rail as well, further decarbonizing the transportation sector.
BROADBAND Broadband connectivity to trains, railyards, and operation centers can further reduce costs and increase the cost-effectiveness of freight rail through autonomous operations, increased safety, and digital platforms that provide for more efficient and effective operational management and information sharing amongst all parties.
